Avon and Somerset Police have launched a CCTV appeal after an individual placed bacon on the glass door of a Bristol mosque during prayer times.

In a press release, the force confirmed that a religiously aggravated hate crime investigation is ongoing, adding that it occurred around 2:15 pm on 20 February.

Officers took CCTV footage and statements, and increased reassurance near the mosque in Cheltenham Road, Montpelier, whilst liaising with impacted Muslim communities and other mosques.

The man is described as bald, wearing high-visibility trousers and a dark jacket, the press release added.

Responding to the hate crime investigation, Serena Serjeant of Avon and Somerset Police made clear that: “This was a deliberate act which has caused significant concern to the community during a period of heightened religious observance and we will not tolerate hate in our communities,” adding that officers were quick to attend, speak with mosque leaders, and provide further reassurance throughout Ramadan.

Racist graffiti recently appeared on a mosque in Exeter and an Islamic centre in Greenwich, London, earlier this month.

We remain deeply concerned about the targeting of mosques in recent months. The security of mosques, like any place of worship, is paramount, and we will reach out to those impacted and the police to offer support and assistance.

The government announced additional funding last week for the security of faith institutions, and Tell MAMA will continue to assist those with any funding applications.
