The British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating anti-Muslim graffiti inside a toilet cubicle at Liverpool Street Station.

A Muslim woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, got in touch over the bank holiday weekend and consented to us writing about this story and raising awareness.

The language of the graffiti recycled broader anti-Muslim and Islamophobic tropes, including conspiratorial language of Muslims seeking to “take over” the country, linking Muslims generally to terrorism, and dehumanising language about Muslims and hygiene.

Examples of the anti-Muslim graffiti that read “Muslims are taught to attack as one and take over” and “Muslims are trying to take over the UK”.

Examples included “Muslims are the terrorist,” “Muslims are taught to attack as one and take over,” “Muslims are trying to take over the UK,” and “Muslims stink!”

In conversation with our Casework Team, they spoke of their desire to report it, mindful that Muslim communities would use the public toilets, as would children. Nor could she find any station near the toilets to report it either, but we have since made Transport for London aware.

Tell MAMA submitted an online report to the BTP via their online portal.

Members of the public can make the TfL aware of such graffiti or other forms of anti-social behaviour online, which includes racist (and other forms of hate crime) graffiti, which can redirect individuals to the BTP website.
