Tell MAMA continues to pick up a rise in street based anti-Muslim hate that is taking place and which is reported in by British Muslims.
In particular, comments that are made by passing vehicles and against individuals waiting at bus stops, seem to come up again and again in cases of anti-Muslim hatred reported to Tell MAMA.
Since 2016, we have been aware from data that we have collected over years, that the levels of aggression and the types of threats and anger shown to British Muslims (or those perceived to be Muslims), has grown in its intensity and in the geographical spread of cases.
Many of the comments include are based on issues of migration and aggressive instructions to ‘go back to your country’, allied with comments about the Hijab, the Niqab (the face veil) as well as statements around paedophilia. The latter may well have some connection with the ‘grooming gang’ issues, or narratives that have developed about under-age marriage or comments pushed online that child-marriage is a part of Islam – which it clearly is not.
We would urge anyone who has been targeted by anti-Muslim hate or prejudice, to report into Tell MAMA, or to call 101, to ensure that you can access support.
